Grant Application Process

The Knott Foundation uses a two-step application process:

Step One requires the submission of a Letter of Inquiry.

Step Two is based upon a review of all Letters of Inquiry by our Grant Screening Committee. Applicants whose Letters of Inquiry are approved by the committee will be notified by the Foundation and requested to submit a full Grant Proposal.

General Grantmaking Information

Application Deadlines:  The Knott Foundation accepts applications three times per year in February, June and October. Read below for specific deadlines.  All submissions whether Letters of Inquiry or Grant Proposals, must be received as complete submissions by 5 p.m. on the deadline date.

Size and Duration of Award:  The Foundation generally awards grants under $100,000 but remains open to opportunities for greater impact with larger sums.   The average grant is between $35,000 and $45,000 per year and must be expensed within one (1) year of award.  Multi-year grants are seldom awarded.  If you are seeking funding for an amount less than $10,000, please click here to review our Discretionary Grants process.

Site Visits:  Are required for all organizations asked to submit a full grant proposal.

Reporting:  Interim Reports are due six (6) months after a grant is awarded.  Post Grant Reports are due one (1) year after a grant is awarded.

Reapplying:  Organizations denied funding after submitting a full grant proposal are eligible to reapply after one (1) year.  Funded organizations may reapply after two (2) years.
